Bleeding Leg Veins Chicago

Treating Varicose Veins Schaumburg

Many people who have varicose veins simply suffer in silence, hiding their legs under pants and tights, putting their feet up at night to reduce that achy, heavy feeling, and believing that varicose veins are simply a cosmetic defect that causes minor discomfort they need to live with.

The enlarged, twisted appearance of varicose veins is no doubt a cosmetic issue. However, there are more serious conditions that may arise if these veins are left untreated. In addition to minor pain and swelling, varicose veins can leave you at a much higher risk for bleeding veins and leg ulcers.

Bleeding Veins

Because varicose veins protrude, and lie just beneath the skin, they are much more susceptible to injury if they are bumped or scraped. Additionally, if a varicose vein ruptures, bleeding is likely to be much worse due to the increased pressure (venous hypertension). Life threatening complications may occur due to excessive blood loss sometimes associated with bleeding veins.

Varicose veins are also prone to spontaneous bleeding because of the elevated blood pressure (especially near the ankles) and thinning of the skin where they protrude. As we age, our skin naturally thins, making this more likely to occur. This bleeding can range from sporadic minor bleeds to extreme pressure bleeds that shoot across the room.

Leg Ulcers

No matter how minor a vein bleed may be, there is the additional problem associated with healing. Because circulation may be limited and healing complicated by venous hypertension, even minor wound repair is slowed when it comes to an injury on the leg or foot of someone who suffers from varicose veins. This can lead to leg ulcers that last for weeks or months, leaving the wound susceptible to infection and causing constant discomfort.
