When Varicose Veins Feel Hard to the Touch

Varicose veins are always a cosmetic issue, and often a source of chronic pain and discomfort. However, if left untreated, they can become a serious health risk for some people. If you are noticing that your veins feel hard to the touch, this is an indication that the blood pressure within the vein is greatly elevated. It is likely that you are experiencing partial or complete blood clotting in these veins (phlebitis) as well. This may cause minor tenderness, but usually does not cause a great deal of pain.

However, if left untreated, phlebitis in the superficial venous system (where visible varicose veins occur) can lead to more clots along the venous structures and eventually contribute to the formation of a DVT (deep vein thrombosis-or blood clot in the deep veins of the legs). Unlike clots that form in the superficial veins, a DVT can be a life-threatening occurrence.

Treatment

Of course it is always a good idea to treat any medical condition promptly. Nevertheless, with our busy lives, we tend to leave minor things go until we cannot ignore them any longer. This is often true with people who suffer with varicose veins.

If you have tried to ignore the cosmetic issues and the minor discomfort associated with spider and varicose veins, but now find you have hard veins in your legs—it is time to stop taking this condition lightly. You may never experience serious complications; however, this is a progressive condition that will not get any better without treatment. Why suffer any longer?
